In Loving Memory of our Animal Residents

Penelope
Penelope came to the sanctuary in January 2024 as a 10 year old ‘retired’ goat. She began losing weight in the summer and we began to notice she wasn’t able to keep up with the other goats. She slowly started to decline over the next few weeks and after a visit from the vet, the humane decision was made to have her euthanized as she likely had cancer. Goodbye Miss Penelope, thank you for letting us take care of you. We will see you on the other side!

Bonnie
Bonnie passed away peacefully surrounded by her little friends, Gus, Eva, myself and Dr. Reid. She was 8-10 years old and lived far beyond what is expected. Bonnie gradually declined over the past 2 years from kidney disease and arthritis in her spine and hips. She received palliative care since last September as her conditions further progressed and developed a very close bond with her. It was heartbreaking to watch her slowly decline. Bonnie still lived life with zest and was such a fighter even up to the very end. She will be greatly missed.

Ari
Ari was apart of the duck trio who will be terribly missed. Ari was an Indian Runner duck who loved to explore, splash in the water, and waddle around with her fellow comrades, Mo & Miriam, who were surrendered to us after being a “classroom hatching project”. We lost Ari on January 21, 2024, from a horrific fox attack on the farm. This sudden loss and horrendous incident was extremely upsetting but we are grateful that Mo and Miriam had survived the attack. Rest in peace Ari. Felicia was our first rescued animal and rabbit at Eden’s Way Farm Sanctuary.

Felicia
Felicia’s unexpected death was in October 16, 2023. During a routine vet appointment, Felicia’s breathing had become very fast so our rabbit vet, Dr. Reid examined Fiona and took a chest x-ray. It showed a respiratory infection in her lungs and possibly a mass. We took her home with the plan to start antibiotics as the initial treatment, however, after arriving home from work later that day, we found that she had passed from what we suspect was a sudden heart attack. It was shocking and very upsetting to find her that way as we’re always looking for signs of illnesses in our rabbits but Felicia did not show any signs leading up to her passing. We loved Felicia for who she was and we’re thankful she was able to live the last 4 and a half years at our farm sanctuary. We will miss you Felicia, until we meet again!

Flower
Flower sadly passed away on October 4, 2023. Flower suffered from an upper respiratory infection which was being caused by a blockage, most likely from a growing tumour. Although, she showed signs of improvements in some of the respiratory symptoms, they worsened again over the coming days. She was looking more tired and weak and after the vet’s examination, we made the difficult decision to let her go. Flower was a special little girl, she was sweet, cheeky and spirited. She was very strong and brave fighting her illness for so long.

Baba Skye
We were devastated by the sudden and unexpected loss of “Baba” Skye on September 15, 2022. After an emergency vet visit, we brought Skye home and she seemed to be a bit better but by the next morning, she collapsed and she was rushed to the clinic again. Skye suffered from sever anemia and very low proteins in her body from worms. After treating her for a month, her parasite/worm load remained high and she developed coccidia again. With no treatment for her condition other than multiple blood transfusions which are not available here, the two vets working on her both recommended euthanasia. It was such a heartbreaking decision to let her go. Skye passed peacefully and quickly.

Josephine
Our beloved Josephine passed away on January 21, 2022. Although it wasn’t entirely unexpected as she was slowing down, her eating habits changed and she began sleeping more often. During her last days, she was comfortably sleeping next to the fire place. Josephine took her last breath while being held in the loving arms of the sanctuary founder, Jaye.

Alfred Wigglebottom
Little is known about Alfred prior to his rescue other than he was found abandoned in a bathtub by a landlord who then took him to the SPCA and from there was adopted by the founder of the sanctuary in 2017 to hopefully bond with Frances. Alfred was a laid-back & good-natured rabbit who really seemed to know how to relax & take it easy. He was also a bit of a flirt with the girl buns, although he always remained bonded with Frances. Sadly, he was diagnosed with kidney disease in August 2020, which has no cure & its progression can only be slowed. Over the next year, he was given weekly fluid therapy which greatly helped him for a period of time. However, his kidneys began to fail into the spring of 2021 & by the summer he went into the end-stage of the disease. When his quality of life began to suffer, the difficult decision was made to have him euthanized. He peacefully crossed over on August 15, 2021 & he is now healed and free to run & play on the other side. Until we meet again little Alfred!

Jenoveve
Jenoveve passed away in her sleep on May 10, 2021. She began slowing down the last while and was showing more signs of weakness. She had been doing better since the end of April so her sudden decline in the late evening was unexpected. Jenoveve was a curious, smart and friendly little gal. Although she’s crossed over and now she is fully free and healed, it was still very sad to lose her. She will be missed!

Judith
Judith was an older and larger backyard hen who suddenly passed away after no signs of being ill, which does unfortunately happen with chickens due to various hidden diseases and their ability to hide pain behaviours being in a flock. Although she was more stand-offish with us and we never got to really know her, we can rest knowing that she got to live out her best days at our sanctuary. Rest in peace and fly high in heaven Ms. Judith!

Esther Theodora Federica
In September 2020, the founder of the sanctuary was able to secure the release of Ezekiel’s mother, Esther, who had spent years of suffering on a dairy farm. It was a heartwarming day to reunite the two together and welcome her to the sanctuary. Esther settled into her new surroundings, spending her days roaming freely, soaking up the sun and grazing. However, due to her older age and health conditions, her time spent on the farm was short. She received the best possible veterinary care but her arthritis and hoof disease were too advanced and by early November, she was starting to decline. Although heartbreaking, we showered her with love and extra treats and made her as comfortable as possible for the next few weeks and on November 26, 2020, our compassionate veterinarian helped Esther to cross over into her fields of heaven.
